Our treatments
At the Advanced Acne Institute we use a process we call acne anti-inflammatory therapy, or AAI. AAI therapy works by blocking causes of acne inflammation. Because acne is caused by a series of interactions between hormones and acne-prone pores, we are able to target various sites in the pathway to stop acne from forming.
Some of our treatments include those that calm and control inflammation at the skin barrier as well as those that target acne internally. Both forms of treatment are used together to deliver the most rapid and effective results.
Barrier control therapy
At the Advanced Acne Institute we developed a proprietary method for calming inflammation at the skin surface. Developed by our founder Dr. Arthur Colsky, Hydrating Base is a blend of powerful skin soothing and calming ingredients to provide the needed support for maintaining the skin surface. In acne, the skin surface is under constant attack by the inflammation for breakouts. If not treated, the skin surface will begin to become dry and irritated causing the symptoms of acne to worse. Patients at the Advanced Acne Institute are treated with Hydrating Base to deliver optimal calming therapy to aid in their overall improvement.
Light therapy
At the Advanced Acne Institute we employ light-based options to contribute to silencing inflammation. Using Blue Lit therapy, many of our patients achieve good control of acne breakouts. The focused wavelength of blue light serves to kill bacteria in acne-prone pores and reduce inflammation. This treatment can be used on its own or in conjunction with other therapies for maximal response. The treatment is tolerated very well.
Internal treatment
At the Advanced Acne Institute we use a variety of effective internal remedies to target acne inflammation. One of the points of treatment includes acne causing hormones. Hormones are one of the main contributors to acne breakouts. In susceptible people they cause over activity of the acne-prone oil glands which leads toward acne development. By using medications to selectively block the offending hormones, acne control can be achieved. At the Advanced Acne Institute we use a medication called spironolactone to effectively block hormones called androgens in females patients. This medication is usually well tolerated and can lead to very effective results. Other hormone-based treatments include birth control pills. Both control pills that contain both estrogen and progesterone can often be effective treatment for acne related to hormonal activity.
Isotretinoin
For those with severe acne breakouts, the Advanced Acne Institute uses a medication called isotretinoin. Isotretinoin is the most effective therapy for severe acne. It works by preventing the acne-prone oil glands from becoming swollen and inflamed. The effects are so dramatic that is sometimes referred to as an “acne cure” however there is not as of yet a true cure for acne. Patients treated with isotretinoin can experience very long periods of clear skin and some patients never develop acne again. However, many patients developed a reoccurrence of acne breakouts at sometime following conclusion of isotretinoin therapy.
